Founded in 1940 in Røros, Norway, Røros Tweed creates textiles that merge Norwegian tradition with modern technology. Our craftsmanship is rooted in weaving, reflecting generations of expertise. We source raw material from Norwegian wool supplier Norilla and our parent company “Rauma Ullvarefabrikk” handles carding, spinning, and yarn dyeing, ensuring a sustainable and vertically integrated process.

Nestled in Norway's rugged landscape, Røros Tweed has been weaving its heritage and craftsmanship into every thread for centuries. From its humble beginnings as a trading post to a thriving modern textile mill, Røros Tweed has become a hub of creativity and skill, where generations of artisans have honed their craft and passed down their knowledge from one generation to the next.

Røros Tweed is located 600 meters above sea level in Røros, Norway. An unlikely location for a textile factory, many may think - but it has its history. Peder Hiort, who was director at the Røros Copper Works in the 1700s, bequeathed his entire fortune to the poor in Røros.

According to the will, wool and flax should be purchased for distribution among the poor. From this, they were to spin, knit and weave to produce socks and warm clothes - textiles that were necessary in the cold mountain climate of Røros. The products were collected, and wages were paid for the work. Every year at Midsummer, these textile products, along with other gifts, were distributed to the needy. Many who were first paid for the work received the products back as gifts.

The foundation of Røros Tweed was a continuation of Hiort's foundation's and resulted in weaving courses in 1938-1939. Textiles were woven in private homes as Hiort's Foundation had been doing for 150 years, and a sales center was established. A few years later Investments were made in machinery, and eventually the business moved to more factory-style production. The need for larger premises emerged, and a new factory was completed in 1952.

Today, Røros Tweed has reorganized its production to meet the challenges of the modern textile industry. The factory's production is now focused on high-quality interior products made of 100% pure new wool, designed with inspiration from the aesthetic and cultural heritage of Røros and Hiort`s legacy.

Whether you're keeping warm or adding a touch of color to your home, you are a part of a legacy that spans centuries and will endure for generations to come.
